Our Partners

We strongly encourage anyone who wants more experience to consider serving urban students through a service year, by mentoring, or tutoring in cities throughout the country. Here are a few programs we partner with to make this possible.

AmeriCorps

AmeriCorps is a network of national service programs, made up of three primary programs that each take a different approach to improving lives and fostering civic engagement. Members commit their time to address critical community needs like increasing academic achievement, mentoring youth, fighting poverty, sustaining national parks, preparing for disasters, and more.

Breakthrough Collaborative

Breakthrough operates summer and school-year programming to partner with students from under-resourced communities on their paths to college and offers a challenging teaching residency for college undergraduates under the guidance of professional teachers.

City Year

City Year is working to bridge the gap in high-poverty communities between the support that students need, and what their schools are designed and resourced to provide. In doing so, they’re helping to increase graduation rates across the country, and changing the lives of the students they serve.

Higher Achievement

Higher Achievement closes the opportunity gap during the pivotal middle school years. By leveraging the power of communities, Higher Achievement’s proven model provides a rigorous year-round learning environment, caring role models, and a culture of high expectations, resulting in college-bound scholars with the character, confidence, and skills to succeed.

Jumpstart

Jumpstart’s program is replicated across the country in 14 states and the District of Columbia. They leverage partnerships with higher education institutions, community organizations, Head Start programs, community-based preschools, and school districts to create sustainable solutions to close the kindergarten readiness gap.

Literacy Lab

The Literacy Lab serves children from age three through grade three. They partner with school districts to help close the literacy gap largely by embedding full-time, rigorously-trained tutors in early childhood centers and elementary schools. The Literacy Lab also supports early literacy for families experiencing homelessness.

Peer Health Exchange

Peer Health Exchange’s mission is to empower young people with the knowledge, skills, and resources to make healthy decisions. They do this by training college students to teach a skills-based health curriculum in under-resourced high schools across the country.

Reading Partners

Reading Partners focuses on students who are at least one month behind in reading, harnessing the power of community volunteers to provide individualized instruction to help them master the reading fundamentals they need to reach grade level. Their trained, committed community volunteers work one-on-one with these students, delivering a simple, proven curriculum each week to help the child begin to gain lost ground.

Saga Innovations

SAGA Innovations transforms the academic trajectory of students by giving them the skills, the attention and the self-esteem they need to succeed. Their tool is “high dosage” tutoring, personalized instruction from Professional Tutoring Fellows, for one class period every day for an entire school year.

Service Year

A service year is a paid opportunity to develop real-world skills through hands-on service. No two service years are alike. Whether you’re figuring out what’s next after high school or college, searching for an opportunity to find a new path, looking to gain skills and experience for a job, or wanting a career change — a service year may be just what you’re looking for.

Substantial

Substantial is committed to helping cultivate college students as substitute teachers and this site will provide open source resources, ideas, inspiration and connection between individuals and institutions taking on this challenge so that we can all work to improve the 10% of time students spend with subs.

We hope you will stay in touch with us and be part of our greater mission to empower students through learning. We wish you the best of luck in all of your endeavors.
